Жгучие мурашки забегали по хребту: снизу вверх. От крестца — и до середины спины; не выше. Можно подумать, черный трудяга-муравей выскользнул из-под шпажного острия, забрался Джеймсу под одежду и теперь звал на подмогу толпу верных, расторопных сородичей. Казалось, в крестце, в тайных недрах тела, погребенный под развалинами, просыпается кто-то — полумертвый, растоптанный, слепой и глухой ко всему, кроме одного-единственного зова. Восстает из смертного сна и идет наружу, потому что не может иначе. Однажды, в синей ночи под желтым месяцем, был миг милосердия — и миг этот стоил всех сокровищ мира, отныне и навсегда.
— Я знаю жизнь, — сказала Вуча Эстевен.
И внезапно, бледнея, сделала шаг назад.
— Я тоже знаю жизнь, — ответил Джеймс Ривердейл.
